The day of 2 October has a special significance in the history of India.  Like Independence Day and Republic Day, October 2 also has the status of a national festival.  This day is recorded in the pages of history as the birthday of two great personalities of the country.  Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, was born on 2 October 1869 and his actions and ideas played a big role in shaping independent India.  Former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was born on 2 October 1904.  His simplicity and humility were convincing.  His slogan of 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan' given during the Indo-Pak war of 1965 is accurate and meaningful even in today's perspective.

 1836: Naturalist Charles Darwin returned to England after a five-year trip to collect important material related to his studies.
 1869: Birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in Porbandar, Gujarat.  This saint, who contributed significantly to the independence of the country, drove the British out of the country without taking his selfless spirit and weapon and was called 'Mahatma'.
 1904: Birthday of Lal Bahadur Shastri.  Being a prominent freedom fighter, he became popular with his simplicity and with the slogan Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.  During the Indo-Pak war of 1965, he defeated the enemy with great firmness.
 1906: Death of King Ravi Varma.
 1929: Gandhiji made Navajivan office a public trust.

 1968: A bloody movement of students before the Olympic Games begin in Mexico City.  25 killed in clash with police.
 1968: A British woman gives birth to six children simultaneously.  For the first time in the country's history, Sheila Thorns of Birmingham gave birth to four boys and two girls through an operation two months before the scheduled period of pregnancy.
 1971: The President of India dedicated the Birla Sadan to the country.  Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in this building and was renamed Gandhi Sadan.
